A registered oral health therapist, Janet has spent the last decade working to ensure oral health care is provided for our frail and elderly, living in residential aged care facilities (RACF). She designed and implemented a student placement program in RACF in 2010; at the University of Newcastle and developed translational research known as ‘Senior Smiles’, that places a qualified dental practitioner (oral health therapist / dental hygienist) into this environment. She has recently presented this oral health model to the Royal Commission in Aged Care. Janet says that oral health care must be considered as part of general health care in all environments, especially where people need assistance with their daily care needs, such as RACF.
