Nurse left ‘wiping away tears’ after unbelievable act by Kmart checkout worker

Foster-mum nurse left ‘WIPING AWAY TEARS’ after unbelievable act by Kmart checkout worker

A Sydney nurse has shared on Facebook how she had gone into Kmart and become “embarrassed and a bit flustered” at the register when she found out she had left her wallet behind in the car.

She goes on to describe how a kind Kmart worker came over and tried to coach her through the Afterpay checkout process. Through that conversation, the Kmart worker learned that she was a healthcare worker who also was caring for three foster children.

“When I had completed scanning my items I realised I had left my purse in my car,” she said.

“I got the attention of the staff member assisting customers at the registers and explained my situation.

“She could see I was embarrassed and a bit flustered and she said she could talk me through paying for my items with Afterpay so I wouldn’t have to traipse back to my car for my wallet. She told me not to worry, it happens all the time.”

“She said how amazing I was and how blessings would surely come my way for the work I do.”

The Afterpay option turned out also to be a non-starter and feeling very flustered, the nurse thought it would be best to leave the items at Kmart and return later with her wallet, as she didn’t want to be late with the school run and picking up her kids.

“Moving through the Afterpay process, I discovered that to register I needed my credit card details, from the card that was in my purse – in the car,” she remembers.

“Embarrassed yet again, I asked if she could set my items aside and I would return to pay as soon as I could as the afternoon school run was looming.

“She assured me that it wasn’t a problem at all, that she would be finished her shift by then but she would let her colleagues know I would be returning.”

Returning to Kmart

After the kids were safely picked up, the nurse returned again to try and pay for the items for her family. She asked for the items that had been set aside for her and got ready to pay but was then told that the items were paid for. She told the new Kmart worker that this couldn’t be right, she still had to pay but was reassured that the items were completely paid for already.

“Post-school run, I return to the register area and ask if a staff member could please get the bag of items that were put aside for me.

“Another staff member went behind the counter and retrieved my bag and said the items were paid for. I corrected her and said, ‘Oh no, I still need to pay for them.’

“To which another staff member, who overheard the conversation, repeated that they had been paid for.

“Then it registered with me what had happened. That previous staff member who so professionally calmed my nerves and embarrassment had paid for my items herself.”

The nurse was stunned to find out that the initial Kmart worker had paid the total amount of the items and she could now just take the items home.

The Kmart worker had left behind a handwritten note with the items saying: “Please accept this as a blessing from me to you and your family.”

A happy November 9

The nurse details that this heartwarming event took place on November 9 at her local Kmart chain.

She remembers how the kind act left her in tears and that she felt “blessed.”

Continuing on Facebook she says “I thanked the staff and left feeling a bit overwhelmed as nothing like that has ever happened to me.”

“Upon returning to my car I wiped away the tears that welled and truly felt blessed by the lovely gesture of this staff member. I really wished she was still at work so I could have thanked her personally.”

Highlighting how beautiful acts like this are, the nurse and foster mum said, “I’ve made this post public in the hopes that it encourages others to perform a random act of kindness the way this staff member did and that this post finds its way to management and staff and to the generous, kind-hearted staff member who personally paid for my items.

“She truly has a kind heart and went above and beyond today.”

Resonating worldwide

After what the world has gone through in the last 18 months it’s no surprise that many people have been moved by this event.

Social media messages have been written such as, “Wow what a heart felt lovely gesture, there are some beautiful caring people out there. Employee of the year definitely.”

And another, “There is kindness in this world. I would have bawled my eyes out at the checkout!”

Countless moved and heart-warmed, “How beautiful and well deserved.”
