Queensland records second COVID-19 death in a week as Brisbane man dies

An 80-year-old man who returned to Brisbane from the Philippines has died in hospital from COVID-19 complications. 

According to the Queensland Chief Health Officer Jeannette Young, the man died on the morning of Monday, April 12. 

“He returned to Australia from the Philippines on March 20, tested positive on March 25 and was admitted to the Prince Charles Hospital for care, and then passed away late yesterday,” she confirmed on Tuesday.

“That is, of course, very sad news for his family and his friends.

This marks the second COVID death in the state this week, following the death of former Papua New Guinean Governor Malcolm Kela Smith on April 6. Before this, the last death in Queensland was a year ago on April 5, 2020.

Queensland currently has 55 active cases, with two new cases detected from returned overseas travellers. The new cases were detected while the travellers were in quarantine.

So far, Queensland Health has administered 112,000 vaccines since March. People over 50 are still being encouraged to book in AstraZeneca vaccine doses.
