The St Albans Park man was arrested early yesterday and charged with rape, aggravated burglary, recklessly causing serious injury, common law assault and theft.
Police were inundated with information after the assault of the elderly woman at the Tannoch Brae Aged Care home at 4.45 am on Sunday morning.
Detectives from the sexual crimes squad thanked the public for their support after the police appealed for help to identify and locate the attacker.
“I understand how much concern an incident like this causes in the community, so being able to make an arrest in just over 24 hours is reassuring,” said sexual crime squad Detective Acting Inspector Mark Burnett.
“Our thoughts are with the victim and her family at this time, and they will be offered a range of support services.”
Anyone with further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential crime report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
This is sickening, that poor woman.
Regardless of what his lawyer says, that his client suffered a bad childhood, ice addiction, low intellect, etc: the low life who would inflict such horror on that poor lady, he MUST be given a harsh custodial sentence.
The aged care facility must also accept a portion of blame, for not securing the residents at night.
Dianne Hyatt. You’ve said it well.
The facility must have secure premises after 6pm and security rounds should be attended throughout the shift, and noted to be done.
CCVcameras should be in use in all corridors.
