At eighty-one, Jessie has spent the last three years in residential care following the loss of her beloved husband and a series of dangerous falls.

Jessie defied her parent’s wishes when she married her high school sweetheart, Alex, at seventeen. They believed the couple were too young and the marriage would not last. Sixty-three years later, Jessie proved them spectacularly wrong.

Jessie and Alex had three sons, born a year apart, who grew up to be strong, successful men with impressive careers. Each of them married their childhood sweethearts, just like their parents.

All three couples went on to have two daughters each, born within three years of one another. Natalie and Sophie share a birthday; Emily and Charlotte were born days apart in March, while Louise and Chloe arrived in December, with Chloe being the youngest, born on Christmas morning.

Now, as teenagers, Jessie refers to them as being her guardian angels. Each girl has a unique and cherished bond with Jessie, forever grateful for her devotion, dedication, and nurturing during their formative years.

All three families live within a mile of each other, keeping the strong family connection alive; the camaraderie amongst the girls is uplifting and a joy to behold.

Jessie tells me she remembers all their dates of birth and weight, and they keep her young with their constant support.

The girls visit Jessie regularly, either in twos or threes, not to over-excite her; on special occasions, all six fill the room with fun and laughter.

On her Eightieth birthday, the family hired her favourite restaurant for the evening, where she indulged in her favourite meal, scampi and chips, with a playlist of music from her younger days that filled the room with nostalgic memories.

Everyday, Jessie is pampered with an array of treats, her favourite foods, and special snacks that bring a sparkle to her eyes.

The girls brighten her day further by surprising her with small bunches of wildflowers and thoughtful gifts, each chosen to lift her spirits. Each evening, her devoted son’s telephone to ensure Jessie feels cherished and connected.

With a joyful heart, she often exclaims that she always feels shrouded by loving gestures that light up her day.

The girls frequently turn to Jessie for guidance on a range of topics, spanning from the complexities of relationships with boyfriends to navigating the challenges of work and study.

They hold her wisdom in high regard, appreciating her shrewd judgment and the depth of her perception. Jessie’s advice comes from a practical understanding of her life experiences and her ability to share common sense and intuition with the girls.

Her ability to see things clearly and offer thoughtful perspectives makes her an invaluable confidante in their lives.

The conversations frequently drift back to Jessie’s childhood, illuminating her life with their beloved grandfather, Alex. Each recollection recalls life’s cherished memories and poignant moments, painting a vivid tapestry of the experiences that profoundly shaped her identity.

The warmth of laughter, the sparkle of shared secrets, and the lessons tucked within those nostalgic events create a rich backdrop, allowing Jessie to revisit the laughter-filled summers and quiet winter evenings that forged her sense of well-being and shaped the person she has become today.

Each visit ends with how much the girls love Jessie, with a warm, heartfelt hug to reassure their love and devotion.

When I ask Jessie to describe the girls individually, she closes her eyes and begins with the firstborn, Natalie, who is the wisest of all the girls.

She always uses her common sense and caution. Sophie is an adventurer – fearless and always open to new experiences. Emily and Charlotte are both artistic, full of creative ideas and optimism.

Charlotte has a rebellious side, sporting tattoos that Jessie doesn’t like, despite this, she’s a good girl like her other granddaughters, so Jessie keeps her opinions to herself.

Louise is sensitive and slightly shy; she often gets embarrassed easily when the other girls tease her. Finally, Chloe, the youngest, is the most opinionated and extroverted.

The six cousins have very different personalities; three are blond, two are brunette, and Emily changes her hair colour every other week.

However, they all share one common bond- their love and devotion to their grandmother. Together, they form a formidable force that enriches Jessie’s life daily, with never a dull moment when the girls are in the room.

Jessie has had a lifetime passion for Greek mythology, drawing parallels between her six granddaughters and the six daughters of Gaea and Uranus.

Jessie is kept young, vibrant, and valued by her beautiful guardian angels. The girls understand that Jessie will not be around forever and ensure each moment spent
together is full of gratitude, happiness, and laughter.

After all, that is what love is all about.

Jessie settles back into her old recliner chair, feeling like royalty, reflecting on the love of her three devoted sons and their wives.

Though their busy lives keep them from spending as much time with her as her granddaughters do, she cherishes those moments filled with gratitude, recognising the unconditional love and support the girls bring into her life, feeling truly blessed and content.
