Interactive music sessions encourage movement and connection in aged care

Shane Morgan from Morgan’s Acoustics – Music for Humanity is transforming aged care through interactive music sessions that promote positive ageing, engagement, and movement for residents aged 60 to 100 years. Currently, Shane provides programs across Southern Cross Care sites statewide, as well as St Bridgis Green and other locations.

Unlike a standard performance, each session is a collaborative experience where residents actively participate in creating music. Using a variety of instruments, from shakers and drums to hand-held percussion, residents contribute to melodies, rhythms, and songs. The sessions spark joy, build confidence, and encourage genuine connection, with noticeable improvements in mood and engagement after every visit.

Shane also offers themed programs including Spanish, Australian, Fleetwood Mac, pirate-themed music, Serbian improvisation, and world music. Many sessions evolve into original compositions as residents’ contributions are incorporated, giving everyone an opportunity to be heard. Residents’ voices and instruments become an integral part of the performance, creating a truly shared musical experience.

At Southern Cross Care Living in Maroubra, staff observed residents laughing, moving, and interacting with one another during Shane’s sessions. Participation extended to both staff and residents, reinforcing a sense of community and fun.

Testimonials highlight the impact of Shane’s approach. Recreational Therapist Mariam Abdulkader from South Coogee praised Shane’s patient guidance, saying residents enjoyed learning rhythms and beats and found the sessions both new and engaging. Resident Ruth said she “thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon” despite feeling tired at first, and Alicia noted she loved playing the hand-held instruments and even sang a song in Spanish. Barbara shared how she overcame her shyness and sang a whole song by herself with encouragement from Shane and other residents.

At the heart of Morgan’s Acoustics is a mission to build meaningful connections through original music, engaging rhythm, cultural diversity, and movement. Shane believes every note and beat fosters joy, confidence, and genuine human connection across all cultures. Each session promotes not only musical creativity but also physical movement and social engagement, helping residents experience positive ageing in a holistic way.

Shane Morgan, a versatile musician, composer, and passionate music facilitator based in Kurrajong Heights, brings decades of improvisation and performance experience to his programs. His work spans composing for documentaries, audiobooks, and film, and he is currently collaborating on a therapeutic album with a harpist. Shane’s approach is rooted in the belief that music can connect, heal, and bring communities together.

Looking ahead, Shane hopes to expand Morgan’s Acoustics across Australia, sharing this inclusive and dynamic experience with more communities. As he says, “Positive ageing is about more than just time; it is about the connections we build, the joy we rediscover, and the movement we embrace across all cultures.”

Morgan’s Acoustics continues to demonstrate that when aged care residents actively participate in music, the results extend far beyond entertainment. Through engagement, laughter, and shared creation, residents experience improved wellbeing, stronger social bonds, and the simple joy of being part of something meaningful.
