She envied her sister’s beauty, but her sister envied her life

She envied her sister's beauty, but her sister envied her life

Jane had a younger sister named Helena, just three years her junior, who seemed to radiate a magnetic charm. As Jane settled into her well-worn armchair, nestled beside the window of the residential home, she could not help but reflect on their contrasting lives.

“She was always the popular one,” Jane lamented, her voice tinged with nostalgia. Helena had a cascade of golden, curly hair that framed her face like a halo; Jane had straight brown hair that fell flat against her shoulders, lacking the flair that caught the eye.

Helena possessed striking blue eyes that danced with a vivacious energy, drawing others towards her, whereas Jane had deep brown eyes that remained downcast, forever eclipsed by the “Plain Jane” label that shadowed her every move.

Jane confided in me with a hint of regret, revealing that she had, unfortunately, inherited the unmistakable traits of her father’s genes. In contrast, her sister Helena took after their mother, whose beauty and grace had once captivated audiences as a glamorous dancer in her youth. As Jane spoke and showed me photographs of her mother, I could see the striking resemblance between her and Helena, both of them embodying the elegance and charm of their mother, who seemed to live on in Helena’s features, a mirror image of the past.

When they were teenagers, a rare moment of sisterly transformation occurred. Helena, with her innate sense of style and flair, decided to give Jane a complete makeover. Under her sister’s skilled hands, she curled her hair into bouncy waves that danced with light. A touch of makeup, expertly applied in the latest trendy styles, highlighted the delicate features of her face.

Helena even rummaged through her own colourful wardrobe, lending Jane a beautiful outfit that promised to reveal a side of her she had never dared to show.

They snapped photos that day, capturing the joy and laughter shared, a fleeting glimpse of what life might have been like for Jane. It was, she would later say, one of her happiest childhood memories with Helena.

Unfortunately, the magic was short-lived. When Jane awoke the next morning, the vibrant curls had vanished, her makeup washed away in the night, leaving her with her familiar reflection. The stylish clothes were returned, carefully folded and placed back in the wardrobe, a gentle reminder of the brief moment when she felt like anything but Plain Jane.

Helena had always been the life and soul of the party, earning the reputation of a “Goodtime Girl”. With her magnetic personality, she effortlessly drew people in with her sharp wit and infectious laughter. Academically gifted, she excelled in school, often balancing her studies with an active social life filled with late-night parties and spontaneous adventures.

Yet despite her vibrant exterior and numerous friendships, Helena never settled down; she never married, had no children, and endured a series of tumultuous, unfulfilling relationships that left her feeling more isolated than ever.

As the years rolled by, Helena became increasingly invested in her appearance, undergoing a multitude of surgical procedures in an attempt to preserve and enhance her beauty. Each procedure was a testament to her desire to maintain the youthful figure that had always been admired by friends and strangers alike.

However, beneath the layers of makeup and the carefully curated image of perfection lay a hidden insecurity. Deep within herself, she harboured a quiet envy towards her younger sister, Jane.

Jane had built a life that Helena had once dreamed of, a life filled with love, stability, and family. She married her high school sweetheart, and together, they welcomed two handsome sons into the world and three grandchildren.

Helena had often longed for that same joy and fulfilment, wishing for the warmth of a loving partnership and the laughter of children to fill her home. This aching desire remained a secret for years, buried under Helena’s carefully crafted persona.

It was not until recently, after a heartfelt conversation with Jane in the aged care home, that Helena found the courage to confess the depths of her envy. Now in her mid-seventies and reflecting on the choices of her past, she finally revealed to Jane the truth of her feelings, how she had quietly yearned for the life her sister had created.

The revelation surprised Jane, who had never sensed even a hint of discontent from her sister amidst their years of shared memories. This confession opened up a new dialogue between them, allowing for deeper understanding, affection, and a renewed bond formed in the twilight of their lives.

After all the years of sisterhood, they now shared mutual respect and affection for each other, with Helena exclaiming that it was never too late to make amends.
