This Mother’s Day, carer Megan Mainwaring will be having a special lunch with her children and her mum, who she also cares for.

Anyone who has cared for an elderly family member knows the love and sacrifice it takes. But for some, the skills learnt from caring for a parent can become something much more – even a career.

Megan is a care manager at The MyHomecare Group in NSW and started working in the industry when her dad went into an aged care facility.

Megan wanted to learn and understand the system so she could care for her mum at home.

After being made redundant, Megan didn’t know what she was going to do.

“I thought maybe I will stay home and look after my mum and dad but it can be a very confusing space to navigate so I decided to study aged care disabilities and haven’t looked back since,” she said.

As many can attest, Megan said being a carer provides her with a great sense of fulfilment and helped her to navigate the challenges associated with caring for an older parent.

The myHomecare Group Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Tomás Chubb, believes there is an interesting pattern amongst its carers, where many break into the industry off the back of caring for an older family member.

“Caring is at the centre of what we do so it is heartening to see how this has been passed from generation to generation in our support workers who then share that special compassion with our clients,” he said.

“This Mothers Day we are celebrating all of our carers and clients who have at some point put caring for another above themselves.”
