Police have described the body of an older man to have a “mummified look” after it was discovered in his Gold Coast home earlier this year.

Homicide detectives are now investigating the “suspicious” death of 69-year-old Tomislav Nemes after his body was found badly decomposed in a bed at his home where his family allegedly lived with it. Police believe he was dead for more than 12 months when he was discovered.

This week, police released photos of Mr Nemes in order to gain more information as they investigate his death.

In April, police conducted a welfare check at the Benowa home after a relative raised concerns when a family member wouldn’t let anyone see Mr Nemes because he was “too unwell”. Mr Nemes lived at the property with his wife and stepson and Detective Acting Inspector Mark Proctor said the 70-year-old woman and her 48-year-old son have been interviewed by police.

“[His wife and stepson] are certainly persons of interest. They were inside the house at the time […] We are not looking to lay charges at this point in time, but we are fully investigating the incident.”

A crime scene was declared and Operation Victor Countryside was established to investigate the death. The exact cause of Mr Nemes’ death is yet to be determined.

Police are asking that anyone who may have attended that property for any reason in the last few years to come forward and assist police. Friends, family and associates of Nemes, from Queensland, or the Australian Capital Territory where he lived prior to 2018, are also asked to come forward.
