Aged care is undergoing a revolution, driven by cutting-edge technology that places meaningful engagement at the heart of care. SilVR Adventures, a leader in virtual reality (VR) for older adults, has partnered with Medical & Aged Care Group (MACG) in Victoria, St Luke’s ElderCare (SLEC) in Singapore, and NewDirection Care in Queensland to take personalised VR experiences to the next level.

Through the 360° Camera Project, families, care staff, and residents are becoming content creators—filming familiar places, cherished moments, and cultural celebrations—bringing immersive, deeply personal experiences to life.

This initiative highlights how technology can strengthen family connections, empower care teams, and enhance social engagement for aged care residents. With stunning footage, heartwarming stories, and overwhelmingly positive feedback, this project is redefining what’s possible in aged care.

Personalised VR: Bringing the Outside World In

For many aged care residents, stepping outside can feel overwhelming or even impossible. SilVR Adventures is tackling this challenge head-on by turning everyday places and special moments into immersive VR experiences.

With 360° cameras in hand, family members, care teams, and even residents themselves have begun capturing significant locations—from childhood homes to local parks, community spaces, and cultural festivals.

This project has already been embraced across Singapore, New Zealand, Queensland, and Victoria, proving that technology is not just about innovation—it’s about connection, empowerment, and inclusivity.

MACG: VR as a Pathway to Reconnection

At MACG’s Parkdale care home in Victoria, some residents rarely left their rooms, lacking the confidence or motivation to explore communal spaces. Enter VR: MACG filmed their own care facility—outdoor gardens, shared areas, and vibrant community spaces—allowing room-bound residents to experience these spaces in VR first, building confidence before stepping outside in real life.

The results were astounding:
✅ Residents who had remained in their rooms for months were now stepping outside to explore.
✅ 100% of participants rated their VR experience positively, with nearly 77% calling it “very Good” and 23% calling it “Exceptional.”
✅ 100% of respondents found the VR session relaxing.
✅ More than half (52%) expressed interest in sharing their VR experiences with family members.

“Technology should never replace human interaction; it should enhance it,” says Colin Pudsey, Founder & CEO of SilVR Adventures. “The success of this initiative at MACG demonstrates how VR can inspire residents to reconnect with their surroundings and their community in meaningful ways.”

SLEC: Reuniting Families Through Virtual Celebration

Over in Singapore, St Luke’s ElderCare saw an outpouring of enthusiasm from families when given the opportunity to record Chinese New Year celebrations for their loved ones in aged care. Families filmed the preparation of traditional meals, festive shopping, family gatherings, and even beloved pets, creating truly personal VR experiences for residents.

For resident Mdm Lim Choy Hoy, the experience was transformative. Watching her family prepare for the Lunar New Year, she could see her husband and daughter again, reminisce about past celebrations, and even talk about taking care of the family dogs when her daughter travelled.

The impact of personalised VR content was equally meaningful for Mdm Lee Bee Huah, who enjoyed revisiting her home through VR and sharing these virtual moments with her best friend, Mdm Lim.

“At SLEC, we are always looking for ways to drive care outcomes through innovation,” says Ms. Jinq-Yi Lee, Manager, IT Systems (Digitalisation), at St Luke’s ElderCare. “Adding personalised content creation to our successful VR program with SilVR is a fantastic initiative, and the early reactions from residents and their families have been incredibly rewarding.”

NewDirection Care: A Glimpse of Home & Nature

At NewDirection Care in Queensland, families and staff used 360° cameras to capture places that meant the world to residents—such as local bush trails, riverside walks, and cherished family homes. One resident, who had spent years longing for the sights and sounds of Australia’s outback, was able to reconnect with these familiar places through VR, creating a profound sense of comfort and nostalgia.

A Cultural Shift: Empowering Teams & Residents

Beyond family connections, this initiative is also driving cultural awareness and engagement. At one aged care provider, 20% of the workforce comes from Nepal. Seeing residents take a keen interest in learning about their carers’ traditions, the team embraced the opportunity to film Nepali cuisine, cultural celebrations, and ceremonies—turning VR into a two-way storytelling tool that fosters deeper understanding and shared experiences.
