77-year-old deaf woman confronts knife-wielding intruder

A 77-year-old woman has been left shaken after a frightening aggravated burglary at her Port Melbourne home, where she woke to find an armed intruder standing over her bed.

The incident occurred in the early hours of 18 March at a property on Heath Street. Police allege a man entered the home about 3am while the woman, who is partially deaf, was asleep.

She was confronted by the offender, who was holding a knife. Despite the terrifying situation, the woman raised the alarm and confronted the man, chasing him out of the house and into the street.

The intruder fled the scene with a number of stolen items, including jewellery and electronic devices.

Investigators say the suspect is described as a thin-built man in his 20s, believed to be of Indian or Sub-Continental appearance.

Detectives have since released CCTV footage as part of their investigation and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the man.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Victoria Police on 131 444 or submit a confidential report via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
