A 32-year-old aged care worker from Birkdale has been charged after allegedly stealing a debit card from a 104-year-old resident at a Redland Bay aged care home and using it to withdraw thousands of dollars.
According to Queensland Police, the woman is accused of taking the elderly man’s card while working at the facility and using it to make unauthorised purchases and cash withdrawals over several days between 19 and 21 August.
The alleged theft came to light when another staff member reported the missing card on behalf of the centenarian, who had noticed it was no longer in his possession.
Following an internal report, detectives began an investigation that led to the woman’s arrest on 28 October.
Police have charged the woman with 40 counts of stealing. She is due to appear before Cleveland Magistrates Court on 11 November.
Detective Inspector Wayne Francis from the South Brisbane District Bayside Crime Group said the incident served as a reminder of the need to remain alert to signs of elder abuse.
“Offences of this nature are a terrible breach of trust against some of our most vulnerable members of society,” he said.
The investigation highlights ongoing concerns about the protection of residents in aged care homes and the responsibility of staff to uphold the highest standards of honesty and care.
