Brazen pickpocketer targets elderly man at Victorian RSL

Victorian police are asking members of the public to help them identify a thief who stole an elderly man’s wallet at a North Melbourne RSL club earlier this month.

The offender came up behind the 86-year-old victim who was using a walking frame as he crossed the floor of the gaming room at the Glenroy RSL club, Victoria about 2.30 pm on Wednesday, August 3.

The offender was caught on CCTV snatching the wallet from the elderly man’s rear pocket.

The victim did not realise what had happened and the offender left the venue, fleeing in a black Honda Jazz with unknown registration.

It was not until CCTV footage was inspected that the offence was identified, which has been released by Broadmeadows District Police to help find the offender.

The offender was perceived to be about 20-to-30-years-old with black hair and a black beard, wearing a black Adidas hooded-jacket, black Everlast track pants, and black Nike slip-on shoes with white socks.

Anyone who recognises this man, or has information that could assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online on the Crime Stoppers Victoria website.

UPDATE: Moreland detectives arrested a 25-year-old man this afternoon at a Pascoe Vale address in Melbourne in relation to the theft.

The victim’s personal documents and cards from the wallet were recovered during the execution of a search warrant.

The Pascoe Vale man is currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.
