Easing the burden of meal preparation after loss or illness

Easing the burden of meal preparation after loss or illness

For many older Australians, the death of a spouse or recovery from serious illness can transform something as simple as preparing a meal into an emotional and physical ordeal.

Grief, fatigue, reduced mobility and the sudden reality of cooking for one can leave even the most capable person feeling overwhelmed. Shopping, planning and standing at the stove become daily reminders of loss or limitation, often leading to skipped meals, poor nutrition and a quiet erosion of independence.

Yet good nutrition is one of the most powerful supports for healing and staying strong at home. That is why services such as My Choice by Lite n’ Easy have become a lifeline for so many widows, widowers and people recovering from illness.

Developed by Accredited Practising Dietitians and professional chefs, these frozen meals are high in protein, balanced with vegetables and fibre, and offered in portion sizes that suit smaller appetites. Delivered straight to the door and ready in minutes in the microwave, they remove the burden of meal preparation while delivering consistent, familiar nutrition that aligns with the Australian Dietary Guidelines.

Loma, 82, from Queensland, knows this only too well. After losing her husband she found cooking for one both emotionally draining and physically difficult. A lifelong believer in staying active and independent, she had worked as a personal assistant in law, public service and education, and continued studying and volunteering in retirement. Loma faced additional health challenges including arthritis, high cholesterol and a susceptibility to pulmonary embolism. Maintaining her wellbeing through good food suddenly felt impossible.

“Cooking for one was hard after losing my husband,” she says. “Lite n’ Easy helped remove that burden. I no longer worry about what to cook, and I know I am eating balanced meals that support my health. My goal has been to maintain strength and good health as I age, and Lite n’ Easy has helped me do just that.”

Through her Home Care Package the meals are affordable on a pension, and the convenience has been transformative. “Having these meals delivered truly feels like a blessing,” Loma adds. “Living alone and becoming less mobile, I am so grateful for the convenience and variety. There is always something I enjoy and options suitable for winter and summer menus.”

Graham, 91, also from Queensland, faced a similar turning point. For years he cared for his wife, relying on Lite n’ Easy to manage the extra load. After her passing he continued with the service, later adding the My Choice range created specifically for older Australians. Never a confident cook, Graham now enjoys meals that guarantee his daily protein and vegetable intake without any preparation.

“Without Lite n’ Easy, I couldn’t manage,” he says. “Having these meals prepared for me makes sure I get my protein and vegetable intake for the day, and I can enjoy a tasty meal with no cooking required.” The Home Care Package subsidy keeps the cost to around $3 to $4 per meal, and he praises the senior-friendly customer service whether ordering online or by phone.

At 91, Graham is anything but slowed down. He walks 30 to 40 kilometres a week, plays lawn and indoor bowls, hikes to the top of the mountain for coffee with mates, and enjoys wood turning and writing poetry. He even sent Lite n’ Easy one of his poems, capturing perfectly how the service has lightened his load:

Cooking a meal can be fun for some
But not a great joy for an older one.
Lite n’ Easy has a meal for every taste
And a better option without waste.
In the microwave for a minute or so
All prepared and ready to go.

Sylvia, 84, from South Australia, experienced the same relief after losing her husband four years ago. At first she leaned heavily on her daughter Kate, but she hated becoming too reliant.

“I was not taking care of myself,” Sylvia remembers. “With the help of Lite n’ Easy and my Home Care Package I have reclaimed my life and independence. It is a joy to open the freezer and be able to choose tasty meals.”

Last year a serious fall left Sylvia wheelchair bound for months. Lite n’ Easy removed the worry of shopping and cooking, supporting her recovery and helping her maintain a healthy weight.

“I feel healthier,” she says, “and I know with the help of the dietitians behind the scenes my quality of life is better.”

Kate, who worked in aged care herself, sees the difference every day: “The balanced, affordable meals from Lite n’ Easy have freed up so much time for Mum and me to spend creating memories instead of being restricted by shopping and cooking. Lite n’ Easy has promoted and enhanced Mum’s independence and zest for life.”

Even those who still enjoy cooking occasionally find the service invaluable. Chris, 72, from Queensland, likes to prepare meals himself after a day with the grandchildren or on the tennis court, but on busy or tiring days Lite n’ Easy provides the perfect back-up: nutritious, great tasting meals that look and smell appetising without any effort.

These stories illustrate how removing the daily grind of meal preparation can ease the weight of grief, speed recovery from illness and restore a quiet sense of control and joy.

For many older Australians funded through Home Care Packages or the Support at Home program, My Choice by Lite n’ Easy makes staying well nourished and independent at home not only possible, but simple.

  1. Is this an ‘advertorial’ for Lite’neasy’?? Who chose this food line for promotion as the option instead of promoting Meals on Wheels??
Has a contract been taken out between the government and Lite’nEasy?
Seems they are always being promoted as the ‘go to’ for meals now?
I feel uneasy about the alliance.

  2. “Meals under SAH are 40 per cent more expensive than under CHSP, according to evidence presented to a Senate inquiry. Navigation through My Aged Care has become even more labyrinthine, assessment queues have lengthened, and the preventative focus that kept many older people out of higher cost care has been diluted.”
The above is an excerpt from another article on this page about meals for older adults.
Meals through most providers, other than Meals on Wheels, are priced exorbitantly.
Mostly Lite’nEasy, which appears to be the only option through providers.
    I question this.
