An elderly man has allegedly been assaulted by two tradesmen during a shocking road rage confrontation on a busy Melbourne road, with dashcam footage capturing the moment the situation spiralled into violence.
The incident is understood to have occurred last week on Mickleham Road in Tullamarine, as traffic slowed near a set of lights.
Vision recorded by a passing motorist shows a silver sedan reversing slightly on the main road. Ahead, another vehicle appears to be attempting to merge between lanes. The elderly driver of the sedan is believed to have reversed to make space for the merging car.
A truck behind the sedan also reversed briefly. Moments later, two men are seen exiting the truck and approaching the silver vehicle.
According to the motorist who filmed the encounter, the situation escalated almost instantly.
Speaking on Melbourne radio, she described watching the men open the elderly driver’s door before allegedly striking him repeatedly.
“He was just trying to let someone in,” she said. “They didn’t like that he reversed. They got out, opened his door and started hitting him. It was awful.”
She said several drivers contacted police immediately, though traffic began moving once the lights turned green, forcing witnesses to leave the scene.
The footage appears to show one of the men throwing a punch through the car window before the second joins the confrontation. There is no indication in the vision that the sedan made contact with the truck.
Radio host Jacqui Felgate, who discussed the incident on air, said the speed at which the confrontation turned violent was alarming.
“It went from zero to 100,” the witness said. “There was no discussion. They just went straight into physical abuse.”
Dashcam footage clearly shows the name of a company on the side of the truck involved. However, the business has not been publicly identified.
Victoria Police confirmed they are aware of reports relating to the incident and have made enquiries. A spokesperson said that while a passer by had contacted police, follow up enquiries were still underway and officers had yet to formally identify a reported assault.
The alleged attack comes amid growing concern about aggressive behaviour on Melbourne roads. In 2025, several serious road rage incidents made headlines across Victoria.
In one case, a man was left fearing he may lose vision in one eye after being repeatedly punched at a suburban car wash in what police described as an unprovoked attack. In another, AFL identity Iain Findlay was hospitalised after allegedly being struck and dragged by a vehicle during a confrontation.
A national survey conducted last year by dashcam brand Nextbase found almost four in five Australian drivers had experienced or witnessed road rage. While most respondents said they would remain calm or vent quietly if frustrated, a small but concerning percentage admitted they would shout or even get out of their vehicle.
For many motorists, the alleged assault in Tullamarine is another disturbing example of how quickly tensions on the road can turn dangerous, even when a driver appears to be attempting a simple act of courtesy.
