Elderly woman murdered in front yard in tragic act of domestic violence

A quiet suburban street in Brisbane’s northwest became the scene of a horrific tragedy on Monday afternoon when an elderly woman was found fatally stabbed in the front yard of her home.

Emergency services rushed to the property on Chestnut Place, The Gap, at approximately 4.20pm, but despite their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police swiftly launched an investigation, leading to the dramatic arrest of a 40-year-old man from Victoria at Brisbane International Airport just two hours later. The man, who was known to the victim, has since been charged with murder in what authorities have classified as a domestic violence offence.

Detective Acting Inspector Mick Jones described the incident as distressing for both first responders and members of the local community. ‘It was a rapidly evolving situation which involved a number of police methodologies to locate that person in such a quick period of time,’ he said.

Queensland Police responded urgently after the man was seen leaving the property following the attack. Officers deployed a helicopter and the dog squad in their search before successfully apprehending him at 6.25pm. Authorities have not yet confirmed how he travelled to the airport.

While the man had recently come to the attention of authorities in relation to an unrelated matter, he was not well-known to police and was not subject to any domestic violence orders.

Local residents have expressed their shock at the tragic event, describing the neighbourhood as a peaceful area where violent crime is rare. Police have reassured the community that there is no ongoing threat.

The accused remains in custody and is scheduled to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on 25 March as investigations continue.
