While we typically think of care workers, nurses or hospitality staff – just to name a few – as the usual aged care workers, there are plenty of others who fit under the wide, dedicated workforce umbrella, including hairdressers.
After cutting the hair of Resthaven residents and clients for 45 years, Jan Beattie says it’s the relationships that matter most.
A former salon owner, Jan has never forgotten the day she walked into the aged care home to ask about any potential job openings. For those too young to remember, this occurred in a time when there were no mobile phones and it was the norm to walk into a business and ask for a job!
“In 1979 I visited and spoke to the Matron Dulcie Miller about a hairdressing job. She told me there wasn’t any vacancy, but three weeks later I had a phone call to say there was an opening and I should come in. The rest is history,” Jan said.
Jan has seen plenty of change during her 45 years with Resthaven, including the age of her clients and the hair styles they ask for.
“When I first started, the hairdressing room was situated in the therapy room (shared with the physiotherapists). I had two dryers and a basin!” she explained.
“At the time, many of the residents were in their 60s, whereas these days, many are in their 90s. There have certainly been some changes over the years. There are not as many perms to do these days!”
While the perms may have gone out of fashion, Jan’s love for her job never has. She continues to cut, shampoo, blow dry and set residents’ hair with the occasional perm thrown in for good measure. She has about 20 appointments a week and keeps in regular contact with residents and clients every six weeks or so.
For Jan, and the residents, the haircut is important, but the pampering and socialising is arguably most important.
“I enjoy working with older people. My clients really appreciate the care, and their families do as well. We love having a chat and over the years I have built many strong relationships with people through Resthaven,” she added.
Jan is a regular face at her salon located within Resthaven Marion, although she has spent time in salons/homes across the city throughout her career. It’s clear that she’s a cherished part of the team, providing invaluable services and friendship to residents!
