Australia’s oldest married couple: Max and Janet Henner celebrate 80 years of love

In a world where lasting love stories seem increasingly rare, one Sydney couple continues to prove that true devotion can stand the test of time.

Max and Janet Henner are Australia’s oldest married couple, and after 80 years together, they’re still deeply in love. Max is 105 and Janet is 98, and their extraordinary journey began in 1945 in post-war Poland.

“She was singing beautifully,” Max recalls of the moment he met his future wife. A gifted pianist, he was accompanying her performance in Warsaw when the sparks first flew. The war had just ended, and both were grieving profound losses. Max had lost his entire family during the Holocaust.

“We needed each other,” he said. “We could help each other.”

From that moment, a powerful bond was forged. Janet says it was love at first sight: “I tell you I like him from the first day.”

The couple eventually made their way to Australia and built a life filled with music, family, and mutual care. Like any long marriage, theirs hasn’t always been easy. “Like any marriage, we had highlights and not so,” Janet said. “I am quite happy, but you know, could be quite difficult.”

Despite the challenges, their connection remains strong and affectionate. “After so many years, he likes to touch me,” Janet said with a gentle smile. “He liked to be close to me.”

Max agreed simply and warmly: “I love being close with her. I love being with our children.”

When asked about the secret to their enduring relationship, the couple share a simple truth. “Two different people, they have to adjust to each other,” Max said.

In a world constantly searching for the formula for lasting love, Max and Janet’s story reminds us that resilience, affection, and shared purpose go a long way.

Sometimes, the greatest love stories aren’t found in books or movies—they’re found in real life, quietly unfolding before our eyes.
