Elderly Canberra man allegedly held captive and assaulted over three days

A 78-year-old Canberra man has endured a terrifying ordeal after allegedly being held captive and violently assaulted in his own home for three days.

ACT Policing reports that the incident took place in Belconnen earlier this month after a 28-year-old man arranged to stay at the elderly resident’s home. What began as a visit quickly turned violent, with the younger man accused of refusing to let his host leave and repeatedly attacking him.

According to police, the victim was allegedly kicked and choked several times during the ordeal, which lasted from Wednesday to Friday. The 78-year-old was reportedly confined to his home and unable to seek help until circumstances took a turn.

The situation came to light after the alleged attacker was arrested on Friday for unrelated matters and taken to the ACT Watch House. Later that evening, around 8pm, the elderly man managed to escape, seek medical assistance for his injuries, and alert authorities.

Following investigations, police charged the 28-year-old with multiple serious offences, including three counts of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm, forcible confinement, and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

He appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday and remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.

The shocking incident has sparked concern within the Belconnen community, highlighting the vulnerability of older Australians, particularly those living alone. Police are urging residents to remain vigilant and to report any signs of abuse or coercion involving elderly neighbours or acquaintances.

Support services such as the Elder Abuse Helpline (1800 353 374) are available for anyone who feels unsafe or suspects an older person may be at risk.
