A man may be charged with assaulting one elderly and the death of another in Queensland’s Noosa Heads area over the weekend.

On Sunday morning, an 87-year-old man was out for his morning walk when he was found unconscious with head injuries on the famous tourist beachfront. Bypassers attempted to help him before paramedics arrived but he died soon after.

A 27-year-old Gympie man was arrested and taken into custody about 100m from the scene on the same day. In a separate incident, the man has also been charged with a serious assault on a 69-year-old man which was reported to police on Monday morning.

Police allege the man was assaulted at about the same time as the man who died and the offender appeared to be naked or in the process of undressing at the time of the incident.  The 27-year-old has not been charged with the death of the 87-year-old man at this time but is still in police custody.

Police also believe neither of the elderly men knew their attacker.

“Detectives from the Sunshine Coast continue to appeal for members of the public to come forward with information as they investigate the death of an 87-year-old man on a beachfront path at Noosa Heads,” Detective Inspector, Chris Toohey, told reporters on Sunday.

“Officers are appealing to anyone who may have seen a man who was naked, or in various stages of undress, anywhere near the northern end of Hastings Street or walking into the Noosa Woods pathways between 5am and 7am … to contact them.”

If you have any information about either of these incidents, contact Crime Stoppers Queensland on 1800 333 000 or via their website. You can remain anonymous.
