An older woman has died in a fire at a New South Wales land lease lifestyle resort village.

Fire crews and the Coffs and Clarence Police District are still investigating the cause of the fire that broke out at a land lease lifestyle resort village on the NSW North Coast where the 73-year-old woman died.

The fire was flagged coming from a single-storey residence that is part of the Palm Lake Resort lifestyle village in Yamba at about 9.15pm on Tuesday. Fire crews were dispatched and found the woman unconscious outside her home.

NSW paramedics attended the scene and tried to resuscitate the elderly woman who later  died at the scene from smoke inhalation. She is yet to be formally identified.

Firefighters put out the fire but it caused extensive damage to the residence which has now been established as a crime scene. Police sealed off the burnt area on Wednesday for analysis by the Fire and Rescue NSW’s (FRNSW) Fire Investigation and Research Unit.

“Condolences are offered to the family,” said Managing Director, Scott Elliot, in the statement.

“A support team is on its way to Yamba to ensure neighbouring homeowners and all resort staff members have access to the support they need at this sad time.”

It is unclear what caused the fire but an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire has commenced and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

In a statement, FRNSW said the incident was the fourth fatal residential fire in the state this winter and urged people to check their smoke alarms and develop an evacuation plan in case of a fire.

Anyone with information regarding the incident to contact Crime Stoppers via their website or on 1800 333 000.
