An elderly woman has come forward to recount the harrowing experience, as authorities seek public assistance in apprehending a callous predator.

The victim, aged 85, returned to her apartment complex on Simmons St, South Yarra, on April 1st, only to be followed into an elevator by a young man around 2 p.m.

According to police reports, the man, believed to be in his early 20s, proceeded to solicit the woman for a sexual act, accompanied by a monetary offer. After the victim declined the offer, the man then sexually assaulted her before getting out of the lift on the 10th floor of the apartment complex.

Following the assault, the 85-year-old victim decided to get off on the 11th floor only to be subjected to a second assault from the same man who seemingly used the stairs to get to the next level. He then fled the scene.

Detective Senior Constable Andrew Turton revealed that the perpetrator gained entry to the apartment building by closely trailing a resident. He then loitered in the foyer for approximately 45 minutes before singling out his victim.

“Of significant concern is the premeditated nature of the offence,” noted Turton. “It’s evident that this wasn’t an impulsive act but rather a calculated assault.”

The prolonged presence of the perpetrator within the community over the past month has raised grave concerns among law enforcement officials. Despite exhaustive efforts by detectives, leads thus far have proven futile.

In recounting the ordeal, the victim, whose identity remains undisclosed, described repelling the assailant with her walking frame during the second confrontation.

“I cried out for help, and a kind lady provided me with a telephone to contact the authorities,” she recounted. “However, the assailant threatened to return and harm me further.”

The victim further expressed her apprehension about using the elevator unaccompanied and articulated a desire to relocate from the premises. “I feel constantly distressed and shocked,” she shared.

Turton speculated that the offender may not be a resident of the area or could be a recent arrival. In an effort to facilitate the apprehension process, police have disseminated footage of an individual of interest.

Described as of Asian descent, approximately 180cm tall, with cropped black hair and unkempt facial hair, the individual was observed wearing a black hooded jumper bearing the inscription “Jordan” on the back, paired with black pants and sneakers.

“This abhorrent behaviour is intolerable within our community,” asserted Turton. “Our commitment remains steadfast in safeguarding the public from individuals of this ilk.”
