An aged care facility in New South Wales facing staff shortages has been given some respite in the form of almost 30 care workers and nurses from the Philippines touching down to bridge the gap.

Lutheran Aged Care Dellacourt in Albury teamed up with international recruitment and training company Groworx to bring over 26 Filipino workers and nurses to Australia since its inception in October 2023.

This initiative aims to tackle global workforce challenges and promote a diverse, inclusive team, improving the overall care experience and creating a more positive and fulfilling environment for both residents and staff.

Brian Decano, 44, was one of the first participants to start at Lutheran Aged Care Dellacourt. A former Community Nurse with the Department of Health in the Philippines, Brian obtained his Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) through Groworx to prepare him for working in the Australian aged care sector and progress with his career goal of becoming an aged care Registered Nurse (RN).

“I like to work in areas where I am providing personal care to residents, assisting with their meals and medications, engaging them in social and recreational activities,” said Mr Decano.

Lahni Ross Rosco, 47, is one of the latest workers to arrive at the facility, touching down just a few days ago. The former nurse who worked for a company in the Philippines said she is open and enthusiastic about contributing her services in any area of care to make a meaningful difference in residents’ lives.

“Working in aged care is not only a noble calling but also presents a remarkable opportunity to pursue a career as a Registered Nurse (RN) in Australia.”

Lutheran Aged Care Dellacourt has historically embraced the positive cultural aspects of employing migrant workers. Meanwhile, Groworx helps ensure a smooth transition for workers by preparing them for their new roles in Australia to ensure they meet the high standards of care expected and offering detailed programs to help them get used to their new environment.

“Our international workers improve our team by treating care work as an important and respected job,” said the facility’s Managing Director, Wendy Rocks.

Dan Sandiford, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Co-founder of Groworx, emphasised the program’s impact, saying, “We’re committed to working with providers like Lutheran Aged Care to find innovative solutions to the aged care staffing crisis.”

“This isn’t just about filling gaps; it’s about ensuring high-quality care for all residents. We’re proud to be part of this movement that makes a real difference in communities facing chronic workforce shortages.”
